Space scientists find simple is best
After an epic 6-billion-kilometer mission using the most complex technology, researchers working with the Hayabusa space probe found that sometimes the old engineers' adage "if it doesn't work, hit it" yields results.
The scientists spent days retrieving particles from the Hayabusa capsule that landed in the Australian Outback on June 13, diligently employing electron microscopes and specially made tools to spot and remove each grain.

最高のテクノロジーを用いた壮大な6百万キロの旅路の果てに、宇宙探査機ハヤブサのミッションに従事した研究者が得た経験、それは昔のエンジニアがよく使う格言でもある「動かないなら叩いてみろ」が結果を出したということであった。
科学者は6月13日にオーストラリアのアウトバックに着地したハヤブサの機体から物質を検出するのに何日も費やしたが、その作業は電子顕微鏡と特別に開発された機器で物質を一粒残らず見つけて取り出すという地道なものであった。
容器の中から電子顕微鏡と特別な機械を使って長い時間をかけて微粒子を取り出していたわけですが、もう何も入っていないと思って容器を逆さにしてポンポンと叩いたところ、なんと百個以上の微粒子が出てきたそうです。研究者は「・・・最初からこうしてればよかった・・・」ともらしたとか。単純な方法が一番良い結果を生むこともあるというお話でした。
